5 things you can't miss

"Duelleum" is a show filled with bright colors that commences this year’s MedGames.

From the latin word “duel”, duellum signifies a form of combat in which two adversaries a subjected to strict regulations. The question however is what are these rules by which they must abide and to whom do these rules apply? Does a form of art combing the lust of playing as well as the mystery of the night exist on this earth? The good and the bad? Altruism versus egoism?

Duellum pushes the borders of the typical musical and defies the laws of an adventurous theatrical production. Its dynamic universe will open your eyes as dancers, musicians, percussionists and comedians embark on the stage. An impressing assembly of more than 50 artists will keep you glued to your seats.

Presented in the Maurice-O’Beaudry auditorium of the university’s cultural center, Duellum is an initiative taken on by the 2008 MedGames.

ultimate frisbee
mixed
Rules :

Sport description :

Ultimate Frisbee is a fast team sport where dexterity and endurance are the most important attributes of players. It is a no-contact sport where players call fouls themselves. Teammates make passes between themselves, the objective is to catch the Frisbee in the opposing team’s score zone while evading interception by the opposing team.

Rules of interior play :

  • 1. Terrain : The field consists of a play zone and two goal zones at each extremity (see picture).
  • 2. Face-off : Both teams are aligned face to face on the interior goal line. The defensive (D) team throws the disk to the offensive (O) team. There are 4 players per team on normal matches.
  • 3. Score: The offensive team scored a point every time it catches the Frisbee in the opponent’s goal zone. The Frisbee then starts with the defensive team where the point was scored.
  • 4. Disk movement: The disk is moved by passes between teammates. The disk may be thrown in any direction. The person with the disk is termed the thrower and has 10 seconds to throw the disk. The defensive team’s player marking the thrower is called the scorer and counts loudly the 10 seconds when he is within 3 meters of the thrower.
  • 5. Changing of possession: When a pass is incomplete (dropped, blocked, intercepted, out), the defensive team takes the disk where it immobilized or went out and becomes the offensive team.
  • 6. Switching: Players can be switched only after a point ahs been scored or when a timeout is asked for injury.
  • 7. No-contact: No physical contact is permitted. There is a foul when a contact occurs during throwing or receiving of the disk.
  • 8. Fouls and upfield: If a player loses the disk or cannot catch it because of physical contact, there is a foul and the fouled player takes possession of the disk. If an argument occurs, the play is restarted. It is also prohibited to use other players as shields to stop a defender from reaching an attacker. Lines are not part of the field.
  • 9. Auto-refereeing: Players are responsible for signaling fouls and outs. Players resolve their own disputes. When there is no consensus, the play is restarted.
  • 10. Sportsmanship: The game encourages team spirit and fair play. Competitive gaming is encouraged, but not to the expense of respect of players, rules and fun.
